The cinema "Kastrychnik" was opened there in 1971, later renamed "Belarus".
Originally there was the Choral Synagogue at this place. Although the synagogue was damaged in 1942 during the Brest's ghetto's liquidation, it remained standing until 1959. At that time, it was confiscated by the communist government and transformed into a cinema.
In 1976 the cinema was rebuilt, using the walls of the synagogue as load-bearing interior structures. Nevertheless, the building retained its eight-sided layout. In the basement of the cinema you can still see the foundation of the synagogue and some inscriptions in Hebrew.
Reconstruction of the Cinema Belarus was completed in the winter 2001.
There are today three halls - Big (496 seats), Small (232 seats) and VIP (20 seats).
